Speed Chess or "Blitz Chess" is probably the most popular form of chess but is not recommended for children or anyone trying to master the game. In speed chess, each side has 5 minutes for the entire game set on a chess clock. This forces an amazingly fast paced game. The draw backs to speed chess is at the amateur level of chess, games are extremely sloppy, and nothing is being learned. Cafes and other amateur chess scenes are full of speed chess players who stay the same level year after year. Slower time controls are the best way to improve your chess. Once you have reached a certain level, speed chess is great fun, and a way to test your instincts. For a listing of casual chess scenes go to our tournament section and click on your area.
