Learn How to Play Chess

Welcome to the Learning Area where you can learn the basics of chess! Chess is a game that is loved around the globe for its special game rules. Here you will learn the moves and rules of the chessmen and chessboard. After reviewing some of this material, you should be enjoying a game of chess right away! Find someone to play and start practicing what you have learned.

You will find that there's a lot of information that is covered. You are not expected to learn every little detail about the chess rules right now. Instead, focus on the movement of the chessmen, then come back to the lessons whenever you need to so that you can start memorizing the rules. Use these pages as a reference guide if you forget anything.

So let's get started! Below you can scroll through the page to look at the different lessons. There are arrows at the bottom so you can move on to the next lessons. If you have never learned the game of chess, read the lessons very carefully, and then practice by playing. Some of the images are links so feel free to click on the pictures. Enjoy yourself!

If you have already learned or finished the lessons provided here on these pages you will want to visit our intermediate and ADVANCED LEARNING CENTER located on the main Academic Chess website. Here you will find puzzles and games that can supercharge your chess skills!
