San Francisco Casual Chess

Market Street

Where? On Market Street close to the cable car turnaround.

When ? Every Day after 2pm.

Who? A lot of players. Unfortunately this scene is seedy, because of a police department in San Francisco which has allowed petty crime, drug dealing and harassment by drug pushers to poison what should be one of the most beautiful cities in the world but has become a cess pool. Do not bring kids to this scene.

What types of chess? Most people here play for money. (don't worry about getting a ticket for gambling by these cops) Usually you have to pay fifty cents a game for rent of the board and then whatever bet you have with your opponent (usually a dollar a game).

Noteworthy players: Bunches of crack heads and homeless people. Its amazing how good they can play.

Mill Valley Depot

Where? In Marin County, in the middle of Mill Valley in a square called the Depot. All major streets in Mill Valley lead to the depot. There are chess tables through out the square donated by the late great Bill Graham.

When ? Every afternoon until nightfall. Weekends attract the most players.

Who?A large group of mostly casual players. A master will stop by from time to time.

What types of chess? Mostly speed chess with a few slow caual games.

Noteworthy Players: Roy Hoppe, Hiram.
